An Important Article From Holly’s Pet Care LLC

Let’s be realistic, dogs are not just dogs. They are our babies, our companions, and our sidekicks. That’s why it’s important that you know what to look for in someone who will be taking care of your pet. Whether it’s dog walking, dog sitting or just letting them out to use the bathroom, you want to find the best care for your pet. I’ve put together some things that you should look for in a pet sitter or dog walker.

1. Someone who asks questions

When you meet with someone for the first time, they will need to learn about your pet. The best way to get to know the dog is by asking questions. Each dog is different and has their own quirks. Some things I like to ask my clients:“What happens if we are walking and we see a squirrel?”
“Is there anywhere they do not like to be touched?”
“How do they behave if it’s raining?”
“Will they go after garbage or dropped food and if so, will they listen to leave it?”
I have a long list of questions that I write down in a notebook for later.

2. Someone who seems to love animals

You’ll get a feeling real quick if someone is an animal lover versus someone who is just there for a job. A person who is passionate about pets, like myself, can’t wait to meet, pet and play with your dog. The dog is my main priority. You can feel my compassion. Someone who may acknowledge the pet, but not interact, may make you feel less comfortable. Knowing that I’m excited to care for their pet, puts my client at ease.

3. Someone who has experience

Don’t be afraid to ask questions about their experience with animals. Also, ask for references or somewhere you can see reviews. You want to make sure the person who is taking care of your beloved pet is knowledgeable in pet care. Are they pet CPR certified? Do they have insurance? Bonus for pet sitters who volunteer in a shelter!

4. Someone who makes you feel at ease

A pet lover will be friendly and make you feel good when speaking to them. Their honesty will be evident. Trust your gut. Never feel bad for telling someone they might not be a good fit for you and your pet.

These are my opinions on important things to look for in pet care. Every dog, person and situation is unique. It comes down to trust and that feeling that you know you made the right choice.
