BLOG POST: Murphy is doing so well! We’re down to a system although I remain aware that the system can change at any time. Murphy is eating most of his meals on his own, and every evening I syringe-feed him his holistic supplement cocktail. I vary the time of the feeding and the amount of each ingredient so he doesn’t get used to a specific amount at a specific time. That gives me a little leeway, because perfection is a tough taskmaster!
The Animal Essentials Heart Health and Nuleaf CBD oil are given to him by dropper. He gets the Heart Health twice a day and the Nuleaf CBD Oil 3 times a day. Murphy loves his Primal Raw Goat Milk, and I call it ‘puppy crack’. It comes frozen. Let it thaw in the fridge and pour a little in a dish. I give him some several times a day as a special treat. It’s filled with vitamins, minerals and enzymes. The rest of his supplements are mixed into a teaspoon of organic pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling, just 100% organic pumpkin with no other ingredients) and syringe-fed. I put Murphy on the couch with a pee pad under him to catch any drips. We usually watch TV or listen to music – in other words I don’t make a big deal about syringe feeding.
I learned (from so much wasted food) to only fill the syringes 3/4 of the way, because if you fill them all the way as soon as you put the plunger in the back end the food will shoot out of the front. Filling the syringes 3/4 of the way gives you time to place the plunger into the syringe and put the syringe into the right place in the dog’s mouth without food shooting out before you’re ready.
Throughout the day Murphy gets treats. He comes to me for treats after using his pee box and expects them when I come or often for no reason at all. He’ll suddenly be there at my feet looking up at me, and I know that treat time has arrived!
This is our protocol for now. Every minute of every day with this sweet boy is a gift.
